Prayer and walking with God
Christian Habits
Loading 1 Timothy 4:7-8…
Paul borrows a word from the gymnasium. Godliness, he says, is trained for, which assumes repetition, ordinary effort and days that feel like nothing is happening. Habits do not earn God's favour, but they put us where God has promised to work: in His Word, in prayer, at His table, among His people.
A prayer from this passage
Lord, train me. Give me the patience for small faithful habits when I feel nothing, and keep me from mistaking routine for righteousness. Let time in Your Word and in prayer shape the person I am becoming.
Key truth
Spiritual habits do not earn grace; they keep us in the places where God has promised to give it.

How can I grow spiritually?
Spiritual growth begins with what God has already given, not with effort that manufactures new standing before him. 2 Peter 1 says believers have already received everything needed for life and godliness, and calls them to add diligence to that gift. Growth is deliberate, additive and relational, rooted in abiding in Christ rather than in willpower alone.
How do I study the Bible correctly?
Scripture must be handled rightly, read for what it actually says in its own context, taught by the whole counsel of God rather than a verse pulled loose, and applied through the Christ it points to from Genesis to Revelation. Paul tells Timothy to be diligent to present himself approved, rightly dividing the word of truth, and to continue in what he has learned because Scripture is able to make him wise to salvation. Studying the Bible correctly is a discipline, not an accident.
