You have not withheld your son
The sentence heaven speaks over Abraham is the same sentence Paul later turns around and speaks about God.

lo chasakta
You did not hold back or spare. The verb describes keeping something in reserve, out of reach. Genesis says Abraham kept nothing in reserve.
What God says He now knows
Now I know that you fear God. The sentence has troubled readers who rightly believe God knows all things. Genesis is not teaching that heaven learned something. It is using the language of a court, where what was true is now established by evidence.
The test did not inform God. It brought Abraham's fear of God out of the interior and into an act that could be recorded, remembered, and read for four thousand years. James 2:21 to 23 uses the chapter in exactly that way.
Fear of God, defined by a scene
Scripture repeatedly commends the fear of the LORD without defining it abstractly. Here it is shown. To fear God is to hold nothing back from Him, including the thing He gave.
Notice that Isaac was a gift. Abraham did not manufacture him and could not replace him. The test is whether a gift can be held without becoming a possession, and that question outlives Abraham.
The sentence given back
Romans 8:32 says of God that He spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all. Paul is reaching back to this mountain and using its verb.
Read together, the two verses do something no single verse can. Abraham withheld nothing and was stopped. God withheld nothing and was not. The chapter that spares one son is the chapter the New Testament uses to explain the Son who was not spared.
Christ connection
Abraham's hand was caught in mid air. At Calvary no voice interrupted, because the substitute had already been named in verse 8 and had finally arrived. What Genesis 22 stops short of doing, the Gospels finish.

Ask what you are currently holding in reserve, not from other people but from God. Name it plainly, then hand it over in some concrete way this week rather than in principle.
