Today's focus
James has just compared the tongue to a bit in a horse's mouth and a rudder on a ship, small things that direct something far larger than themselves. Then he changes the picture: the tongue is not only a steering instrument, it is a fire, and a fire needs no size advantage to do damage.
He says it defiles the whole body. Speech is not a separate compartment of a person's life that can go wrong while the rest stays clean. James treats it as connected to everything, capable of setting alight far more than the moment in which a word is spoken.

Today's prayer
Lord, I have said things that did more damage than I intended, and some I intended. Keep me from lighting fires with my mouth, and give me the sense to stop before a spark becomes a forest. Amen.
