The law shows what is right and exposes what is wrong; the gospel supplies what the law could never give.

The Law Given at Sinai

Before a single commandment is given, God identifies Himself by what He has already done. He is the one who brought them out of Egypt. The law at Sinai follows deliverance; it does not produce it. Israel was already redeemed when the commandments were spoken.
This ordering matters for how the whole law should be read. It is not a ladder people climb to earn God's favor. It is instruction given to a people already rescued, showing them how to live as His own in response to what He had done.
- The law was given to a redeemed people, not to redeem a people.
- God's self-identification as deliverer precedes every command.
- Obedience under the old covenant, rightly understood, was gratitude expressed, not merit earned.
Lord, You are the God who delivers before You commands. Let my obedience always answer what You have already done for me, not attempt to earn what You have already given. Amen.
