Built on Genesis 15:1-18. Yahweh makes a covenant with Abram, walking alone between the divided animals while Abram sleeps, and binds himself to a promise Abram did not earn.

The Sign in the Cloud

This covenant follows the flood, and its scope is wider than any that come after it: every living creature, and the earth itself. Before there is a covenant with a family or a nation, there is one with the whole created order.
God gives a sign that requires nothing from the other party to maintain. The rainbow is not a ritual Noah performs. It is a mark God sets in the sky, a promise he keeps by simply not doing something again.
- God's first covenant after the flood covers the whole earth.

- This promise required nothing further from Noah to keep it valid.
Lord, You bound Yourself to the earth itself before You bound Yourself to any one people. Thank You for a faithfulness that reaches further than I usually remember to notice. Amen.
