Moses asks what to say when Israel asks for God's name. The answer is not a title borrowed from the gods of Egypt. It is a self-existing declaration: I am who I am. God does not derive His existence or His identity from anything outside Himself.
This name becomes the covenant name Yahweh, rendered LORD in small capitals through most English translations, and it is bound to the promise that follows in verse 15: this is my name forever. God's self-disclosure at the bush is tied directly to His faithfulness to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
- God's existence depends on nothing outside Himself.
- His name is bound to His promises, not just His power.
- Knowing God's name means being known, not just informed.
LORD, You are the God who simply is, without beginning and without need. Thank You that Your name is bound to Your covenant faithfulness. Let me trust who You have said You are. Amen.
