52 Week Journey

Week 28 of 52

The Names of God

God makes Himself known by what He calls Himself.

Built on . Moses asks for a name, and God gives one that will not be domesticated. Everything this week reads other names against this one.

Names in Scripture are not labels attached after the fact. A name given by God, or a name God gives Himself, tells you something true and lasting about the one who bears it. When God names Himself, He is choosing how He wants to be known, and the choice is never arbitrary.

This week moves through several of the names and titles Scripture uses for God: the covenant name given to Moses, the God who sees, the God who provides, the Lord of hosts, the Shepherd, and finally the name above every name given to the Son. None of these names replaces the others. Together they build a fuller answer to the question Moses asked at the burning bush.
