52 Week Journey

Week 27 of 52

God's Covenants

One story, told through a series of binding promises that build on each other.

Built on . Yahweh makes a covenant with Abram, walking alone between the divided animals while Abram sleeps, and binds himself to a promise Abram did not earn.

The Bible is organised around covenants: with Noah, with Abraham, with Israel at Sinai, with David, and finally the new covenant promised through Jeremiah and enacted in Christ's blood. Each one adds to what came before rather than replacing it, and together they trace a single line from a promise made after the flood to a supper in an upper room.

This week reads six of those covenants in sequence, in their own settings, before asking what holds them together. The Bible calls its own gospel a covenant, so understanding this word is not a background exercise. It is close to the center of how Scripture explains what God is doing.
