A God to You and Your Offspring
The covenant with Abraham names a relationship that outlasts a single generation.

The truth of the day
The covenant with Abraham includes land and descendants, but this verse names something deeper underneath both: to be a God to you and your offspring. The promise is ultimately relational, not only material.
Genesis 15 has already shown God binding himself alone in the covenant ceremony, walking between the pieces while Abram slept. Chapter 17 adds circumcision as the sign, but the covenant itself was already sealed before Abraham did anything to mark it.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
Genesis 15:9-17 describes an ancient covenant-cutting ceremony where both parties would normally walk between divided animals, symbolically accepting the fate of the animals if they broke the agreement. In this scene, only a smoking pot and a flaming torch, representing God's own presence, pass between the pieces while Abram is in a deep sleep. God alone takes on the covenant's obligation.
By Genesis 17, circumcision is given as the covenant's sign in the flesh, but this comes after the promise in chapter 15 was already sealed by God's oath alone. The sign marks the covenant; it does not create it. This order matters for how Paul later argues, in Romans 4, that Abraham was reckoned righteous by faith before he was circumcised.

Canonical themeGalatians 3:16 says the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his offspring, and identifies that offspring as Christ. The everlasting covenant with Abraham's line finds its heir in one person.
