Hope
Biblical hope is not optimism, and it does not depend on your read of the situation.
God is the one living Creator who made everything and depends on nothing, and Scripture answers this question mainly by telling us his character rather than by defining his substance. When God described himself to Moses he said he is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, abundant in loving kindness and truth, and yet will by no means clear the guilty. The New Testament adds that this God is finally known in Jesus Christ, who has made him known.
The Bible was written by many human authors over a long period, and Scripture presents itself as God-breathed rather than as human opinion. Some books name their writer, some do not, and honest study says which is which. Paul calls every Scripture God-breathed, and Peter says no prophecy came by the will of man but that people spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit, which is the Bible's own account of how both authors are involved at once.
Scripture claims to be true and invites examination rather than avoiding it. It says God's word is truth and that it stands when everything else fades, and the New Testament writers appeal to eyewitnesses, named places and public events rather than to private experience. Trust in Scripture is finally trust in the God who speaks in it, and the clearest reason a Christian gives for that trust is that Jesus treated these writings as God's own word.
Scripture speaks of the Holy Spirit as a person rather than a force. Jesus calls him another Counselor whom the Father sends, and says he teaches, reminds, guides, convicts and speaks. Peter calls lying to the Holy Spirit lying to God. He is the one who gives new birth, dwells in believers, produces Christlike character, and always points to Christ rather than to himself.
When the disciples asked this, Jesus answered with a pattern rather than a technique. Pray to your Father, in private, without performance and without needing many words, because he already knows what you need. The prayer he gave begins with God's name, kingdom and will, then asks for bread, forgiveness and protection. Scripture adds that we may bring everything, that the Spirit helps our weakness, and that we can ask with confidence when we ask according to God's will.
Scripture says yes, and it is careful about the word need. God promises to supply what his people need, often daily rather than in advance, and he does not promise surplus, comfort or the removal of hard seasons. Paul, who wrote that God will supply every need, also wrote that he had learned to be hungry.
Scripture never tells a frightened person that fear is imaginary. It says do not be afraid hundreds of times, and almost always attaches a reason rather than a technique: I am with you, I have redeemed you, you are of more value than sparrows. It also distinguishes the fear that must go from the fear of the Lord, which is commanded and which shrinks every smaller fear.
Scripture introduces Jesus of Nazareth as a real man in real history who is also the eternal Word through whom everything was made. He is the promised Christ of Israel, the Son of God, crucified under Pontius Pilate, raised on the third day, and now confessed as Lord. The Bible never presents him only as a teacher, and it never lets him remain a private opinion. It records him asking his own followers the question and waiting for their answer.
Scripture says yes, and it does not say it in one verse only. Jesus is called God directly, is said to have made all things, forgives sins, receives worship, and takes to himself words that the Old Testament reserves for Yahweh. At the same time he prays to the Father, obeys the Father and calls the Father greater. The Bible holds both together without apology, and the reader who wants an honest answer has to read the whole case rather than one proof text.
Son of God is first a royal title from Israel's Scriptures, promised to David's heir, and Scripture applies it to Jesus as the true king. In the Gospels it carries more than kingship: the angel uses it of his conception, the Father's voice uses it at his baptism, and his hearers understood him to be claiming equality with God by calling God his own Father. It does not mean that God had a wife, or that the Son began at Bethlehem, or that he is a lesser second god.
The New Testament says yes and puts the claim in a form that can be tested rather than admired. Paul lists named witnesses and a group of over five hundred still living when he wrote. The accounts describe a body that could be touched and that ate, not a vision. They also record the first alternative explanation, that the disciples stole him, and record who paid for it. Scripture treats the resurrection as the point on which everything stands or falls, and says so in those words.
Scripture never gives one tidy reason for all suffering. It says that pain entered a good world through sin, that God is neither its author nor its prisoner, that he uses it without approving of it, and that he entered it himself in Christ rather than explaining it from a distance. The Bible answers the question with a person before it answers it with an argument.
Scripture says yes, and it says so without depending on how the prayer felt or how quickly it was answered. God's hearing is grounded in his character and in Christ's mediation, not in our fluency. The Bible distinguishes between being heard, being answered, and being answered yet, and confusing those three causes most of the doubt.
Scripture treats anxiety with far more tenderness than most Christians expect. It names it honestly, traces it to a divided and overloaded heart, and answers it with the character of God rather than with willpower. The command not to be anxious always comes attached to a reason and to an action, never as a bare demand to feel differently.
Biblical trust is not a feeling you generate. It is leaning your weight on what God has revealed about himself, especially when your circumstances suggest otherwise. Scripture builds trust the same way every time: by remembering what God has already done, telling him the truth about what you feel now, and obeying the next small thing while the outcome is still hidden.
The Gospel is news, not advice. It is the announcement that God became man in Jesus Christ, lived the life we owed, died the death we deserved, rose bodily from the dead, and now freely forgives and reconciles everyone who turns from sin and trusts him. It is something done, reported to us, before it is anything asked of us.
To be born again is to receive a new spiritual life from God, given by the Holy Spirit, that no amount of moral effort or religious heritage can produce. Jesus told the most religious man in Jerusalem that he must be born again to see the kingdom of God at all. It is not self-improvement. It is a new birth, entirely God's act, that changes what a person is before it changes what they do.
God's apparent silence is felt by some of the most faithful people in Scripture, not only by the weak in faith. David, Job and Habakkuk all cried out into what felt like empty air. Scripture never rebukes them for asking. It records their words as prayer, answers them in its own time, and teaches that God's silence is never his absence.
The fear of the LORD is not terror of an unpredictable God. It is the reverence of a creature who has rightly understood who God is, holy, sovereign and near, and who therefore takes him seriously in every decision. Proverbs calls it the beginning of knowledge, because a person who has not reckoned with God has not yet begun to understand anything rightly.
Spiritual growth begins with what God has already given, not with effort that manufactures new standing before him. 2 Peter 1 says believers have already received everything needed for life and godliness, and calls them to add diligence to that gift. Growth is deliberate, additive and relational, rooted in abiding in Christ rather than in willpower alone.
Faith is not a feeling of certainty or a leap taken without evidence. Hebrews 11:1 defines it as substance and evidence, real confidence in what God has said and promised, even before it is seen. Biblical faith always has an object, God and his word, and it is proven genuine by how it acts, as the long roll call of Hebrews 11 demonstrates.
Jesus rose bodily from the dead because his death alone would have left the debt of sin paid but not proven, and death itself unconquered. The resurrection is God's public verdict that the sacrifice was accepted, his vindication of Christ's claims, and the guarantee that everyone united to Christ by faith will share the same risen life. Without it, Scripture itself says the Gospel would be worthless.
Scripture tests teachers by what they say about Christ, how they handle money and authority, and whether their lives match their message, not by whether they are unfamiliar or disagree with you on a secondary matter. A false teacher denies or distorts the Gospel and exploits people for gain. Faithful believers can differ honestly on many questions without either side being false teachers.
Grace is God's undeserved favor toward sinners, shown supremely in that while we were dead in trespasses and sins, he made us alive together with Christ. It is not a reward for the good we have done or a boost for the good we are trying to do. It is God's own kindness, freely given through Christ, that saves us when we could not save ourselves and keeps teaching us to live for him afterward.
You are saved by turning from sin and trusting Jesus Christ, believing in your heart that God raised him from the dead and confessing him as Lord. Paul states it plainly: whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. This is not a formula to recite but real faith, a genuine turning to Christ as the one who died for your sins and rose again, and it is offered freely to anyone who will receive it.
Scripture answers this exact question three times, to three different people, and gives the same substance every time even though the words differ. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved. Repent, and be baptized in his name for the forgiveness of your sins. Sell what you have, and follow me. These are not three different roads to God. They are one road described to a jailer trembling before a magistrate, to a crowd cut to the heart at Pentecost, and to a rich man who trusted his own righteousness. Salvation has always come by grace through faith in Christ, and the obedience each person was called to simply showed where their faith already stood.
Jesus says his sheep hear his voice, he gives them eternal life, they will never perish, and no one can snatch them out of his hand or his Father's hand. Faithful Christians have read the New Testament's warning passages differently for centuries, some holding that a true believer can finally fall away and others that such warnings are God's appointed means of keeping his own. Every tradition agrees that no one drifts into final apostasy by accident, that ongoing repentance and faith are how a Christian actually lives out salvation, and that assurance is meant to be enjoyed, not manufactured by fear.
