Mercies New Every Morning

"The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning."
Jeremiah writes these lines with the smoke of Jerusalem still in his clothes. The temple is gone. The walls are down. Nothing in his circumstances has improved between verse 20 and verse 22.
What changes is the direction of his attention. He turns from what he has lost to what has never been in danger of ending.
A mercy measured in mornings
Mercy arrives in daily portions, like manna. You cannot store tomorrow's grace tonight, and you were never asked to.
This is why the Christian life is lived in mornings. Each one is a fresh delivery, sufficient for the day in front of you and no further.
Practice
Before you reach for your phone tomorrow, say the verse out loud. Then name one mercy that arrived while you slept.
