Diligent Hands
Wisdom shows up in ordinary work, not only in words.
What the labels mean
- Scripture explicitly says
- This states what the biblical text itself says, in the passage being read.
- Direct quotation or allusion
- One part of Scripture quotes or clearly alludes to another. The citing reference is named so you can check it.

The truth of the day
Proverbs does not treat work as a necessary evil to be minimized. It treats diligence as a wisdom category with real consequences, contrasted directly with the lazy hand that produces poverty. Ordinary labor is a moral and spiritual matter, not merely an economic one.
This is not a promise that hard work always guarantees wealth, since Proverbs elsewhere acknowledges injustice and hardship that fall on the innocent. It is a general pattern, true often enough to be worth living by, that diligence tends toward provision and laziness tends toward lack.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
The book of Proverbs repeatedly sends the reader to observe the ant, as in 6:6-8, which has no chief, overseer or ruler, yet provides its bread in the summer. Wisdom literature draws practical lessons from creation itself, treating diligence as built into the natural order rather than an arbitrary religious demand.
The contrast between poor and wealth in this verse uses common Hebrew terms for economic outcome, but the book's larger context, especially chapters like 30:8-9, shows Proverbs is not obsessed with wealth for its own sake. The concern is character: diligence reflects self-governance and honor toward the work God has given, while laziness reflects a deeper disorder that eventually shows up in every area of life.
