Giving That God Loves
How you give matters as much as how much.
What the labels mean
- Scripture explicitly says
- This states what the biblical text itself says, in the passage being read.

The truth of the day
Paul is raising money for the poor in Jerusalem, and he takes real care over the spirit of the giving, not just the total collected. Reluctant or pressured giving misses the point even if the amount is generous.
A determination made in the heart, ahead of time, is different from a decision made under the pressure of the moment. Cheerful giving in this passage is planned giving, not just spontaneous generosity.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
2 Corinthians 8 and 9 form one sustained appeal for the collection for the saints in Jerusalem, and Paul uses the generosity of the Macedonian churches, who gave out of deep poverty, as an example before he ever mentions an amount from the Corinthians.
Verse 6 sets up the harvest image just before this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. The cheerfulness Paul asks for grows out of confidence that God is not a debtor but a rewarder of generosity, not out of pressure to perform.

Canonical theme2 Corinthians 8:9 grounds the whole appeal in Christ, who though rich became poor for our sakes. Cheerful giving is a small echo of the larger gift that made the church possible at all.
