Contentment with What We Have
The love of money grows in soil that gain has not satisfied.

The truth of the day
Paul names godliness combined with contentment as the real gain, over against people in the previous verses who supposed that godliness was a way to material gain. The two are not the same thing, and confusing them corrupts both.
The argument he gives is simple and hard to dispute: we entered the world with nothing and will leave with nothing, so food and clothing, the basics, are named as sufficient grounds for contentment right now.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
This passage follows a warning in verses 3-5 about those who suppose that godliness is a means of financial gain, teaching for the sake of profit rather than truth. Paul is correcting a distortion in the church at Ephesus, not giving abstract philosophy about money.
Verses 9-10 continue the thought: those who want to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Notice the target is the love of money and the desire to be rich, not money or wealth as such; the danger named is the appetite, not the object.
