Faith Comes by Hearing

What the labels mean
- Scripture explicitly says
- This states what the biblical text itself says, in the passage being read.
- Direct quotation or allusion
- One part of Scripture quotes or clearly alludes to another. The citing reference is named so you can check it.
- Canonical theme
- A connection across the whole Bible. The passages develop the same theme; one is not quoting the other.
- Interpretive conclusion
- A conclusion drawn from the text. The reasoning is given so you can weigh it against the passage.
- Application
- A step, prayer or question for the reader. Not a claim about what the passage states.

The truth of the day
If faith came from inside us, growing it would be a matter of effort. Paul says it comes by hearing, and that the hearing comes by the word of God. That changes what you do about weak faith.
The way to a stronger faith is not to strain harder at believing. It is to put yourself where God speaks, which is His word, regularly, in large enough portions to hear Him rather than sample Him.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
Romans 10 is about how anyone comes to be saved. Paul builds a chain backwards in verses 13 to 15: calling requires believing, believing requires hearing, hearing requires a preacher, and preaching requires sending. Verse 17 is the summary of that chain, so its subject is not private devotional habit but the way God's word travels to people.
That has two consequences. First, no one is beyond reach, because the word can be carried anywhere. Second, faith is never described as a leap in the dark. It is a response to a message with content, which is why the New Testament argues, explains and gives evidence rather than simply urging people to believe.

Canonical themeThe word that produces faith has a centre. Luke 24:27 shows the risen Jesus opening the Scriptures to explain the things concerning Himself, and John 1:1 calls Him the Word. In Luke 24:27 hearing God rightly leads to seeing Christ.
