Remember the Works of the LORD
Faith grows by rehearsing what God has already done.
What the labels mean
- Scripture explicitly says
- This states what the biblical text itself says, in the passage being read.
- Direct quotation or allusion
- One part of Scripture quotes or clearly alludes to another. The citing reference is named so you can check it.
- Canonical theme
- A connection across the whole Bible. The passages develop the same theme; one is not quoting the other.
- Interpretive conclusion
- A conclusion drawn from the text. The reasoning is given so you can weigh it against the passage.
- Application
- A step, prayer or question for the reader. Not a claim about what the passage states.

The truth of the day
Asaph is in trouble. Earlier in the psalm he asks whether God has forgotten to be gracious. The turn comes when he decides to remember, and remembering is described as work: he will meditate, and he will talk about it.
This is a discipline, not a mood. Faith grows on Sunday by going back over what God has done, in Scripture and in your own life, out loud.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
Read Psalm 77 whole and notice that the psalm does not resolve with a change of circumstances. It resolves by retelling the exodus, ending with God leading His people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron. The comfort is historical.
This is the pattern the Bible teaches its people again and again. Passover, the stones at the Jordan in Joshua 4, the Lord's Supper. God gives His people memorials because faith that forgets what He has done shrinks to the size of the present week.

Interpretive conclusionThe work Christ told His people to keep remembering is the one He finished. In the bread and the cup of Luke 22:19-20 the church is given a way to rehearse the cross weekly, so that faith always has something finished to stand on.
