Faith Working Through Love
You can tell whether faith is alive by watching it.
What the labels mean
- Scripture explicitly says
- This states what the biblical text itself says, in the passage being read.
- Direct quotation or allusion
- One part of Scripture quotes or clearly alludes to another. The citing reference is named so you can check it.
- Canonical theme
- A connection across the whole Bible. The passages develop the same theme; one is not quoting the other.
- Interpretive conclusion
- A conclusion drawn from the text. The reasoning is given so you can weigh it against the passage.
- Application
- A step, prayer or question for the reader. Not a claim about what the passage states.

The truth of the day
Paul spends the whole letter insisting that no religious performance can make a person right with God. Then he says what real faith does: it works by love.
That is the safeguard against two mistakes at once. Faith is not earned by works, and faith is never inactive. It goes to work, and the direction it moves in is love of God and neighbour.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
Galatians was written against the idea that Gentile believers had to add law keeping to Christ. Paul's answer is not that behaviour does not matter, but that the source has changed. In 5:22 the good behaviour he expects is called fruit of the Spirit, which is grown rather than manufactured.
James 2:17 and Galatians 5:6 are often set against each other, and they should not be. Both say that living faith acts. Paul is arguing about how a person is justified; James is arguing about how you can tell whether faith is real. Neither has room for belief that changes nothing.

Canonical themeThe measure of love in the New Testament is not sentiment but the cross. 1 John 4:10 says love is that God sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Faith works by love because it is a response to being loved like that.
