The Substance of Things Hoped For
Faith is described, and the description is not vague.
What the labels mean
- Scripture explicitly says
- This states what the biblical text itself says, in the passage being read.
- Direct quotation or allusion
- One part of Scripture quotes or clearly alludes to another. The citing reference is named so you can check it.
- Canonical theme
- A connection across the whole Bible. The passages develop the same theme; one is not quoting the other.
- Interpretive conclusion
- A conclusion drawn from the text. The reasoning is given so you can weigh it against the passage.
- Application
- A step, prayer or question for the reader. Not a claim about what the passage states.

The truth of the day
Two nouns carry this verse: substance and evidence. Both are solid words. Faith is not wishful thinking about the future; it is the present reality of what God has promised for it.
The things are not seen, but they are not therefore uncertain. In Scripture the unseen is the older and more permanent reality, since the visible world was made by the word of God, as verse 3 says.

- The list that follows this verse is full of ordinary, flawed people.
Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
The Greek word behind substance, hypostasis, is used elsewhere for something that stands under and supports. Faith is spoken of as the foundation on which hope rests, which is why the chapter can then list people whose lives had very little external support.
Notice verse 6: without faith it is impossible to please God, and the one who comes to Him must believe that He is and that He rewards those who seek Him. The chapter defines faith not as certainty about circumstances but as confidence in God's existence and character.

Where this leads to Jesus
Canonical themeHebrews 11 ends unfinished on purpose. Chapter 12:2 tells the reader to look away to Jesus, the author and finisher of faith. Every unseen thing the chapter's saints waited for has its guarantee in a Christ who has already been raised.
