Work Before the Fall
Labor is part of a good creation, not a punishment added later.
What the labels mean
- Scripture explicitly says
- This states what the biblical text itself says, in the passage being read.

The truth of the day
This verse sits before sin enters the story. The man is placed in the garden with a task, not with idleness, which means meaningful work is part of what it means to be made in God's image, not a consequence of the fall.
Dress and keep describe cultivation and protection, an active partnership with what God had made rather than passive enjoyment of it. Work was given as a good gift alongside rest, food, and companionship.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
Genesis 1:28 already gives humanity the task of filling the earth and subduing it, and 2:15 narrows that call to the specific work of the garden. Both texts describe purposeful labor granted in a world still called very good in 1:31, before any sin is recorded.
The difficulty of work described in Genesis 3:17-19, thorns, thistles, and sweat, is a consequence of the fall added to labor, not the origin of labor itself. Recognizing that distinction matters: the frustration many feel at work is a corruption of something good, not evidence that work itself is a lesser calling.

Canonical themeJohn 5:17 records Jesus saying, My Father is still working, and I am working. The Son who labors alongside the Father shows that work belongs to the character of God Himself, not just to human necessity.
