The Diligent Hand
Proverbs takes laziness and diligence seriously, not lightly.
What the labels mean
- Scripture explicitly says
- This states what the biblical text itself says, in the passage being read.

Proverbs is blunt about laziness and its consequences, tracing a direct line from a lazy hand to poverty. This is not a promise that diligence guarantees riches, but an observation about the ordinary connection between effort and provision.
Diligence in Proverbs is not framed as an anxious hustle. It is steady, faithful effort applied to the work at hand, contrasted repeatedly with the sluggard who wants results without the labor that produces them.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
Proverbs returns to the sluggard again and again, in 6:6-11, 13:4, 20:4, and 24:30-34, building a composite picture: someone who loves sleep, avoids finishing tasks, and makes excuses, like the famous claim there is a lion in the road. The repetition suggests this is a common, ordinary temptation worth naming plainly.
The book also balances diligence with wisdom about its limits. Psalm 127:1-2 warns that unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain, and it is vain to rise early and sit up late eating the bread of anxious toil. Diligence is commended, but diligence apart from trust in the Lord is its own kind of foolishness.
