The truth of the day
Joshua does not merely announce his own belief. He commits his household to it, before the assembled tribes, at the end of his life. The choice he asks Israel to make is one he has already made for the people under his roof.
The verse assumes something worth noticing: households can be led toward God, or away from Him, by the decisions of the person set over them. Joshua's example does not remove anyone else's responsibility to choose, but it shows that leadership at home is not neutral.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
Joshua 24 is a covenant renewal, structured like the treaties of the ancient Near East: a recital of what God has done (verses 2-13), a call to decide (verse 14-15), a response (verses 16-18), and a witness set up afterward (verses 26-27). Joshua's household line sits inside this legal shape, not as sentiment but as part of a binding declaration before witnesses.
The text does not say Joshua's household never wavered again; Judges shows the generation after Joshua drifting quickly. What Joshua secures is not automatic inheritance of faith but a clear marker: this house, under this leader, served Yahweh. Each generation after him still had to choose, which is exactly what Joshua tells the assembly to do in verse 15.

Canonical themeJoshua's name and Jesus' name are the same word in Hebrew. The one who led Israel into rest points forward to a greater Joshua who leads a household of faith into a better inheritance (Hebrews 4:8-9).
