Train Up a Child
Instruction given early is meant to last.
What the labels mean
- Scripture explicitly says
- This states what the biblical text itself says, in the passage being read.
- Direct quotation or allusion
- One part of Scripture quotes or clearly alludes to another. The citing reference is named so you can check it.
- Canonical theme
- A connection across the whole Bible. The passages develop the same theme; one is not quoting the other.
- Interpretive conclusion
- A conclusion drawn from the text. The reasoning is given so you can weigh it against the passage.
- Application
- A step, prayer or question for the reader. Not a claim about what the passage states.

The truth of the day
Proverbs speaks in the language of general wisdom, not iron guarantee, and this verse is best read that way: it describes the ordinary shape of things, the ordinary fruit of consistent training, not a formula that removes a child's own will.
The verb train carries the idea of dedicating or setting apart, the same root used elsewhere for dedicating a house. Raising a child is treated as a kind of consecration, not simply management.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
The phrase in the way he should go can also be read as according to his own way, meaning suited to his particular bent. If so, the proverb is not urging identical instruction for every child but attentive instruction fitted to who each child is, still aimed at the same end.
Proverbs as a whole is framed as a father's instruction to a son (Proverbs 1:8), which means this verse sits inside a larger picture of a household where wisdom is spoken, modelled and expected to be received, not delivered in a single lecture.
