As I Have Done to You
Service is a command, not merely an example.
What the labels mean
- Scripture explicitly says
- This states what the biblical text itself says, in the passage being read.
- Direct quotation or allusion
- One part of Scripture quotes or clearly alludes to another. The citing reference is named so you can check it.
- Canonical theme
- A connection across the whole Bible. The passages develop the same theme; one is not quoting the other.
- Interpretive conclusion
- A conclusion drawn from the text. The reasoning is given so you can weigh it against the passage.
- Application
- A step, prayer or question for the reader. Not a claim about what the passage states.

The truth of the day
Jesus draws the conclusion Himself. He does not leave the disciples to admire the scene; He tells them to repeat its posture toward one another, even though most churches do not wash literal feet.
The point is not the ritual but the readiness. Anyone willing to take the lowest job in the room, for another's good, has understood the lesson whether or not water and a towel are involved.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
Verse 17 adds a blessing to the command: if you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. Knowledge of the pattern is not the same as obedience to it, and Jesus distinguishes the two plainly.
The setting is a farewell meal among men He knows will scatter that same night. The command to serve one another was given not to an ideal community but to a group about to fail badly, which is instructive for how the church should carry it today.
