The Least of These
Christ identifies Himself with the overlooked.

The truth of the day
The parable of the sheep and the goats places ordinary acts of care, feeding, clothing, visiting, at the center of judgment. Nobody in the parable is praised for eloquence or achievement.
Jesus says the acts done for the least were done to Him. Service to the overlooked is not a side project of the Christian life; He treats it as done directly to Himself.

- He identifies with the hungry, the stranger, the prisoner.
- Serving the overlooked is not optional charity work.
Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
The sheep in the parable are surprised, in verse 37, asking when they saw the King hungry or thirsty. Their service was not performed to earn recognition; it flowed from who they were, and Christ reveals what it meant afterward.
The setting is the final judgment, in Matthew 25:31-33, which shows this is not a minor ethical footnote but part of how Jesus describes the outcome of a genuine relationship with Him.

Interpretive conclusionThe King in the parable is Christ Himself, who in His earthly life had nowhere to lay His head, as Matthew 8:20 records, and so knows the condition of the least from the inside.
