Not to Be Served
The Son of Man came to serve, not to be served.
What the labels mean
- Scripture explicitly says
- This states what the biblical text itself says, in the passage being read.
- Direct quotation or allusion
- One part of Scripture quotes or clearly alludes to another. The citing reference is named so you can check it.

The truth of the day
This verse answers a request from James and John for the best seats in the kingdom. Jesus corrects their ambition by pointing to His own mission, which runs in the opposite direction from theirs.
Ransom language reminds us that His serving was not limited to acts of kindness. It reached its full weight at the cross, where giving His life served people at their deepest need.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
The request in Mark 10:37 asks for seats at Jesus' left and right in glory, and He answers with the cup He must drink and the baptism He must undergo, pointing toward suffering rather than honor.
Verse 42-44 contrasts Gentile rulers who lord it over others with greatness in the kingdom, which is measured by service. The teaching is not abstract; it directly corrects two disciples in the room.
