Serving with Gifts
Every believer has something to give.
What the labels mean
- Scripture explicitly says
- This states what the biblical text itself says, in the passage being read.
- Direct quotation or allusion
- One part of Scripture quotes or clearly alludes to another. The citing reference is named so you can check it.
- Canonical theme
- A connection across the whole Bible. The passages develop the same theme; one is not quoting the other.
- Interpretive conclusion
- A conclusion drawn from the text. The reasoning is given so you can weigh it against the passage.
- Application
- A step, prayer or question for the reader. Not a claim about what the passage states.

The truth of the day
Peter assumes that every believer has received something worth putting to use. Serving is not held back for the naturally gifted or the officially appointed; it is spread across the whole church.
The word steward carries the sense of a manager entrusted with someone else's property. Gifts are given for the benefit of others, held on trust rather than owned outright.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
The verse that follows, verse 11, splits gifts into speaking and serving, and says that whichever it is, God should be glorified through Jesus Christ in it. Service is not a lesser category next to more visible gifts; it is placed alongside them under the same purpose.
Peter writes to churches under pressure, in 1 Peter 4:12, facing a fiery trial. Serving one another with what has been given is part of how the church holds together under strain, not a luxury for easier times.
