Whoever Wants to Be Great
Greatness in the kingdom is measured by service.
What the labels mean
- Scripture explicitly says
- This states what the biblical text itself says, in the passage being read.

The truth of the day
Jesus does not tell His disciples to stop wanting to be great. He redefines what greatness is measured by, and it is the opposite of what the world calls impressive.
The week closes where it began, with the towel and the basin, but now the principle is stated plainly as a rule for the whole community: the path upward in this kingdom runs downward.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
The context, in verses 20-24, is a mother asking for her sons to sit at Jesus' right and left, and the other disciples becoming indignant. Jesus answers the whole group, not just the ambitious two, because the desire for status was shared.
Verse 28 follows with Jesus' own example: the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many, the same words from Mark 10:45, anchoring the whole teaching in His mission.
