52 Week Journey

Week 25 of 52

Temptation and Endurance

Tested faith learns to stand, and standing is how faith grows strong.

Built on . James opens his letter by placing trials, temptation and endurance side by side, tracing temptation to its own source and promising a crown to the one who stands the test.

Every believer meets two related but different pressures. One is the trial that comes from outside, the hardship, loss or opposition that tests whether faith will hold. The other is temptation, the pull from within to satisfy a good desire in a wrong way, or a wrong desire at all. Scripture treats them as related, since both are occasions where faith either bends toward God or away from Him, but it is careful never to make God the author of the second.

This week follows temptation and endurance through both testaments: the desert, the wilderness, the garden of Gethsemane, and the practical wisdom of James and Paul on how a person actually stands. The aim is not to remove the pressure, since Scripture never promises that, but to see clearly where it comes from, how Christ met it, and what it produces in those who endure.
