The Servant Who Washed Feet

The truth of the day
John says in verse 3 that Jesus knew the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He came from God and was going to God. Then in verse 4 He rises and takes a towel. The full awareness of His authority is what makes the service possible.
This is not a lesson about being nice. Foot washing was the work of the lowest servant in a house. Jesus does it for men He knows will abandon Him within hours.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
Peter's protest in verses 6 to 9 shows the point. He will not be washed, and Jesus tells him that if He does not wash him he has no part with Him. There is a cleansing here that has to be received before it can be imitated, which is why the passage is about the cross before it is about behaviour.
Judas is at the table. Verse 11 tells the reader that Jesus knew who would betray Him, and He washes his feet with the others. The character of Christ is most clearly seen where He has every reason to withhold kindness and does not.
