The Love of God
Not a feeling God has, but a love that acts, chooses, and gives.
Built on 1 John 4:7-19. The New Testament's most direct statement that God is love, tied immediately and inseparably to the sending of His Son and to how His people are to love one another.
Love is the word most easily emptied of meaning by overuse, and the Bible refuses to let that happen to it. Scripture does not begin with a definition of love drawn from human experience and then apply it to God. It begins with what God has done, election, covenant, the sending of a Son to die, and calls that love, so that the highest human loves become, at best, faint echoes of it rather than the standard by which it is measured.
This week follows love from its choosing of an undeserving people, through its steadiness across generations, into its costliest act on a cross, and out again into the love God's people owe one another and even their enemies. Each day looks at a different word, a different scene, and a different angle, so that by the end of the week 'God is love' means something far more specific and far more demanding than a comforting slogan.
