Today's focus
Moses tells Israel plainly why God chose them, and it is not flattering. They were the fewest of all the peoples. Whatever reason God had for setting His love on Israel, it was not found by looking at them.
The verse nearly circles on itself: God loves you because He loves you, and because He kept the oath He swore to your fathers. Love here has no cause outside God's own character and God's own commitment. That is either troubling or immensely freeing, depending on whether you are still trying to earn what has already been given.
Today's reminder
God's love for His people is not a response to their impressiveness.
Love kept because of an oath does not depend on ongoing performance.
Being chosen is meant to produce gratitude, not superiority.
Today's prayer
Lord, I have tried to make myself lovable enough to deserve You. Thank You that Your love toward me was never a response to my size, my strength or my record, but to Your own faithful character. Amen.
