Good friendship changes people, sometimes by friction.
What the labels mean

Sharpening requires contact and resistance, not smooth agreement. The image is friction that produces an edge, applied to what one friend's presence does to another's character.
This is a corrective to friendships built only on comfort and agreement. Scripture pictures the best friendships as ones where two people press against each other and both come away sharper.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
The verse before it, Proverbs 27:6, says faithful are the wounds of a friend, and the two sit close together in the collection: a friend's honesty may wound before it sharpens, and both verses treat that as evidence of real friendship rather than its failure.
This proverb assumes ongoing contact between the two people, since sharpening in the image is not a single blow but sustained friction. Proverbs consistently pictures wisdom as something formed over time in relationship, not received in isolation.
