The truth of the day
Jonathan is Saul's son and the presumed heir to the throne. David has just killed Goliath and is rising in favor with the very king whose throne Jonathan stood to inherit. Their friendship begins in that awkward position, not in safety.
What follows in the chapter shows the cost: Jonathan strips off his robe and armor and gives them to David in verse 4, a gesture that looks like handing over his own claim. Friendship here is not sentiment; it acts against Jonathan's own interest.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
1 Samuel 20 develops the friendship further: Jonathan risks his father's anger to warn David of danger, and the two make a covenant before Yahweh, acknowledging that David will become king in Jonathan's place, in verses 13-17. Jonathan actively supports the very outcome that displaces his own future.
After Jonathan's death, David's lament in 2 Samuel 1:26 calls Jonathan's love wonderful, surpassing the love of women, language that expresses the depth of loyal, covenantal friendship rather than anything else. The friendship outlasted Jonathan's own life in the way David honored his memory and later cared for his son Mephibosheth in 2 Samuel 9.
