Lord, Teach Us to Pray
Prayer is learned, and the disciples knew it.
What the labels mean
- Scripture explicitly says
- This states what the biblical text itself says, in the passage being read.
- Direct quotation or allusion
- One part of Scripture quotes or clearly alludes to another. The citing reference is named so you can check it.
- Canonical theme
- A connection across the whole Bible. The passages develop the same theme; one is not quoting the other.
- Interpretive conclusion
- A conclusion drawn from the text. The reasoning is given so you can weigh it against the passage.
- Application
- A step, prayer or question for the reader. Not a claim about what the passage states.

The truth of the day
The request comes after they watch Him pray. Something about His praying made theirs look thin, and they were honest enough to say so.
That is the first lesson of the week. Prayer is not an instinct you either have or lack; it is something Christ teaches. Admitting you do not know how is the beginning, not a disqualification.
Today’s reminder
Scripture explicitly says- You are allowed to be a beginner at prayer.
- Jesus prayed constantly, and He is the teacher.
- Asking Him to teach you is itself a prayer.
Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
Luke's gospel keeps showing Jesus withdrawing to pray: at His baptism in 3:21, before choosing the twelve in 6:12, before Peter's confession in 9:18. By chapter 11 the reader has seen the pattern the disciples had been watching for months.
The answer He gives is short. The pattern in verses 2 to 4 is followed by a parable about a man banging on a door at midnight and a promise that the Father gives the Spirit to those who ask. Jesus teaches prayer as persistence toward a good Father, not as a technique for correct wording.

Interpretive conclusionThe teacher of prayer is also the reason prayer is possible. Hebrews 4:16 says we come boldly to the throne of grace because of our high priest, so learning to pray means learning to use access He purchased.

ApplicationWhat has kept you from praying more: unbelief, busyness, or a sense that you are doing it wrongly?

ApplicationSet a fixed time to pray for the next seven days, and keep it today even if it is only ten minutes.

ApplicationLord, teach me to pray. I do not know how as I should, and I have often let the fact that I am no good at it keep me away. Teach me, and give me the habit of coming. Amen.
