Our Father
The first word of the pattern changes everything after it.
What the labels mean
- Scripture explicitly says
- This states what the biblical text itself says, in the passage being read.
- Direct quotation or allusion
- One part of Scripture quotes or clearly alludes to another. The citing reference is named so you can check it.
- Canonical theme
- A connection across the whole Bible. The passages develop the same theme; one is not quoting the other.
- Interpretive conclusion
- A conclusion drawn from the text. The reasoning is given so you can weigh it against the passage.
- Application
- A step, prayer or question for the reader. Not a claim about what the passage states.

The truth of the day
Jesus begins with relationship and ends the line with reverence. Father, so you may come freely. In heaven and hallowed, so you never come casually.
Notice also the word our. The prayer Jesus taught is plural from the first syllable. Private prayer in Scripture is still the prayer of someone who belongs to a people.

Scripture explicitly says- You address a Father, not a mechanism.
- Reverence and intimacy belong together.
- His name and kingdom come before your requests.
Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
The order of the prayer is a teaching in itself. Three requests about God come first: His name, His kingdom, His will. Then three about us: bread, forgiveness, deliverance. Most of our praying reverses that order, and the pattern quietly corrects it.
Calling God Father was not unheard of in the Old Testament, but the frequency and ease with which Jesus does it is new, and Romans 8:15 says believers receive the Spirit by whom they cry Abba, Father. The right to use the first word of this prayer is a gift of the gospel.

ApplicationOnly the Son can give others the right to say Father like this. John 20:17 has the risen Christ calling God my Father and your Father in one sentence, which is the whole distance the cross closed.
