Water Into Wine
The first sign, and the reason John calls it that.

The truth of the day
John does not call this a miracle in his own vocabulary; he calls it a sign, and he tells us plainly what it did: it revealed Jesus' glory, and his disciples believed. The wedding at Cana was a small, ordinary crisis, running out of wine, and Jesus met it without any announcement to the wider crowd.
The steward tastes the wine and does not know where it came from, but the servants who drew the water knew, John says in verse 9. The sign was public in its effect and quiet in its cause, which fits how John presents Jesus' identity throughout this Gospel: seen clearly by some, missed entirely by others standing in the same room.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
The setting matters: a Jewish wedding, six stone jars for ceremonial washing, and a wine shortage that would have shamed the host publicly. Jesus turns water kept for ritual purity into wine for celebration, without removing the jars' original purpose from the story John tells around it.
Mary's instruction to the servants in verse 5, whatever he says to you, do it, is the last recorded word of hers in this Gospel. It stands as a kind of hinge for the chapters that follow, in which people who do what Jesus says are repeatedly the ones who see what he does.
