What the labels mean
Scripture explicitly says
This states what the biblical text itself says, in the passage being read.
Direct quotation or allusion

The disciples wake Jesus with a complaint more than a request: teacher, don't you care that we are dying? He answers the storm before he answers them, with a command that a sea and a wind obey instantly and completely.

Scripture explicitly says

The chapter ends not with relief but with fear: they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him? The calming of the storm produces a bigger question than the one it answers.

  • Jesus can be genuinely asleep and still fully in control.
  • A miracle can raise a larger question rather than closing one.
  • Fear of Jesus' authority and fear of the storm are not the same fear.

What the passage says in its own setting

Scripture explicitly says

Mark places this immediately after a chapter of parables about the kingdom, several of which describe things growing or working unseen, a seed planted, a mustard seed spreading. The storm miracle follows with a display of visible, immediate power, as if to answer in action what the parables had described in word.

Interpretive conclusion

Jesus' question back to the disciples in verse 40, why are you so afraid, do you still have no faith, is not scolding them for feeling fear at a storm but for the conclusion the fear led them to, that he did not care whether they perished.

Canonical theme

Job 38 has Yahweh alone asking who shut up the sea with doors; Mark 4 has the disciples asking who this is that even the sea obeys. Mark lets the reader draw the line between the two questions without spelling it out.
