Another Helper
Jesus promises His disciples will not be left alone.
What the labels mean
- Scripture explicitly says

The truth of the day
Jesus is telling His closest friends, on the night before His arrest, that He is leaving. Instead of describing that as abandonment, He calls the Spirit another Helper, of the same kind as Himself.
The Spirit is with them already, Jesus says, but is going to be in them, a shift from proximity to indwelling. This is not a diminished presence after Jesus departs; it is presence made permanent and internal.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
The Greek word translated Helper, parakletos, can also carry the sense of advocate or one called alongside, a legal and relational term used elsewhere for someone who stands with a person in need. John uses the same root for Jesus Himself in 1 John 2:1, describing Him as an advocate with the Father.
The word another in another Helper implies one of the same kind as the first, not a lesser substitute. John's Gospel presents the Spirit's coming as continuous with Christ's own ministry: He will teach, remind, testify and glorify, all things Jesus Himself had been doing among them.

Interpretive conclusionJesus says it is to the disciples' advantage that He go away so the Helper can come. The Spirit's coming is not a lesser replacement for Christ's presence but the means by which His presence reaches everyone who believes.
