Isaiah 43:19 is spoken in the context of God promising deliverance to His people. The verse emphasizes His initiative: He says, “I will do a new thing,” and describes Himself making a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.
The images of a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert describe God creating possibility where the situation appears barren or blocked. The verse does not call Israel to manufacture the new thing. It asks whether they will recognise it, and it calls them to trust the God who has already shown Himself able to save.
- The verbs of the promise are God's: I will do, I will make.
- A wilderness is not stated as the end of the road in this verse.
- Recognising what God is doing is part of the response Isaiah asks for.
Lord, You are the God who made a way through the sea and who promised to make a way in the wilderness. Help me remember Your faithfulness without limiting You to the ways I have seen You work before. Give me eyes to recognise Your work and faith to follow where You lead. Amen.
