The Beginning of Knowledge

Proverbs opens by stating its thesis in its seventh verse, before any individual proverb is given. Everything that follows in the book is built on this claim: knowledge has a beginning, and that beginning is reverence for the LORD, not accumulated information.
The verse also names the alternative directly. Fools do not merely lack wisdom; they despise it, along with instruction. The contrast is not between the wise and the ignorant but between the reverent and the contemptuous.
