The Fear of the Lord
The beginning of wisdom is not terror but reverence that reorders everything.
Built on Proverbs 9. Wisdom and Folly both call out and set tables, and the chapter closes the opening section of Proverbs by returning to its founding claim: the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.
The fear of the LORD is one of the most misunderstood phrases in Scripture, often softened into mere respect or left as unexplained dread. The Bible does neither. It describes a reverence so weighty that it reorders how a person thinks, chooses, speaks and worships, and it names this reverence, repeatedly, as the doorway into wisdom itself.
This week moves through wisdom literature, prophecy, and the Gospels to see fear of the LORD from several angles: as the beginning of knowledge, as the reason for obedience, as a corrective to false confidence, and finally as something that coexists with deep love and confidence before God rather than opposing it.
