Solomon's Unfinished Faithfulness

Solomon began his reign asking God for wisdom rather than wealth or long life, and God gave him more than he asked (1 Kings 3:9-13). This verse records a slow drift decades later, not a single dramatic fall but an accumulation of compromises through his old age.
The comparison to David is notable given David's own serious failures. The issue is not perfection but wholehearted direction; David's heart, despite real sin, stayed oriented toward God in a way Solomon's did not sustain to the end.
- A strong beginning does not guarantee a strong ending.
- Solomon's decline happened gradually, in old age, not suddenly.
- Wholehearted devotion, not sinlessness, is the standard the text applies.
Lord, keep my heart wholly Yours through every season, especially the later ones when comfort and compromise are easiest to excuse. Amen.
