Gifts Given for the Common Good
The Spirit distributes different gifts for one body's benefit.
What the labels mean
- Scripture explicitly says
- This states what the biblical text itself says, in the passage being read.
- Direct quotation or allusion
- One part of Scripture quotes or clearly alludes to another. The citing reference is named so you can check it.
- Canonical theme
- A connection across the whole Bible. The passages develop the same theme; one is not quoting the other.
- Interpretive conclusion

The truth of the day
Corinth's church was quarreling over which gifts mattered most, and Paul answers by relocating the whole conversation: gifts are given for the profit of all, not for personal status.
The chapter lists a variety of gifts, wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, and more, and insists the same Spirit works all of them, distributing to each one individually as He wills, verse 11.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
The chapter's argument builds toward the body metaphor in verses 12-27, where Paul insists an eye cannot say to a hand I have no need of you. The variety of gifts named earlier in the chapter serves this larger point: unity in the church does not mean uniformity of function.
Paul's phrasing, the same Spirit, appears repeatedly through verses 4-11, a deliberate refrain that keeps redirecting attention away from which gift is greatest and back to the single source behind all of them.
