Groanings Too Deep for Words
The Spirit prays for us when we do not know how.

Paul has just described creation groaning and believers groaning while waiting for full redemption, and this verse adds a third groaning: the Spirit's own intercession, done on our behalf when we run out of words.
This is not a criticism of weak prayer. Paul states it as a fact about every believer, we don't know how to pray as we ought, and answers it with the Spirit's help rather than a technique to master.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
This verse sits inside a passage about suffering and hope, Romans 8:18-30, where groaning appears three times: creation groans in verse 22, believers groan in verse 23, and the Spirit groans on our behalf in verse 26. Paul is describing a season marked by real, ongoing difficulty, not a single crisis.
Verse 27 adds that He who searches the hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. The confidence Paul builds toward in verse 28, that all things work together for good, rests directly on this prior assurance that the Spirit's intercession is never misdirected.

Interpretive conclusionThe Spirit intercedes for believers now, and Christ intercedes at the Father's right hand, Romans 8:34. Prayer is upheld on both sides, by the Spirit within and the Son above, so that no believer prays alone.
