Do Not Grieve the Spirit
The Spirit can be resisted, quenched, or grieved.

The truth of the day
Paul places this command in the middle of a list of practical instructions: put away lying, do not let the sun go down on your anger, let no corrupt speech come out of your mouth. Grieving the Spirit is tied to ordinary daily conduct, not dramatic sin alone.
The verse also states a fact worth holding onto: believers are sealed by the Spirit for the day of redemption. The warning against grieving Him does not cancel that seal; it takes seriously that a person He has sealed can still cause Him grief.

Deeper insight
What the passage says in its own setting
The list surrounding this verse, verses 25-32, moves through specific sins: falsehood, unresolved anger, stealing, corrupt speech, bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, evil speaking, malice. Paul treats these not as abstract categories but as concrete behaviors within a church community, and names grieving the Spirit right in the middle of them.
Sealed is a commercial and legal image, used for marking ownership and guaranteeing a future transaction, the same word Paul uses in 2 Corinthians 1:22 and Ephesians 1:13-14 for the Spirit as a down payment guaranteeing the inheritance to come. The seal is God's guarantee, not the believer's achievement, which is part of why grieving Him is treated so seriously rather than dismissed as a minor lapse.

Canonical themeThe seal of the Spirit guarantees the day of redemption, and Titus 2:13-14 describes that day as the appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ. The Spirit's sealing work points forward to what Christ Himself secures.
