This week · Week 36 of 52
Rest and Sabbath
God rested first, and built rest into the pattern of every week since.
Built on Exodus 20:8-11. The fourth commandment, rooting weekly rest in God's own rest at creation.
Seven days on one page. Every week's board and its full study are free to read, with no account needed, including the weeks already behind us. Each week the study changes and the shape of the week stays the same, so you always know where you are.
Day 1
God Rested
Loading Genesis 2:2-3…
God's rest is not recovery from exhaustion. The text says he finished his work, and rest follows completion, not fatigue. Rest here marks a work done well and brought to an end.
Notice what God does to the seventh day itself: he blesses it and makes it holy. Before any command to a person, the day is already set apart by God's own action.
- Rest follows completed work, not only exhaustion.
- The seventh day was blessed and made holy before any law required it.
- Rest is built into creation, not added as an afterthought.
Lord, You rested when Your work was finished and declared the day holy. Teach me to rest as a mark of trust, not only when I am too tired to continue. Amen.
