John does not call this a miracle in his own vocabulary; he calls it a sign, and he tells us plainly what it did: it revealed Jesus' glory, and his disciples believed. The wedding at Cana was a small, ordinary crisis, running out of wine, and Jesus met it without any announcement to the wider crowd.
The steward tastes the wine and does not know where it came from, but the servants who drew the water knew, John says in verse 9. The sign was public in its effect and quiet in its cause, which fits how John presents Jesus' identity throughout this Gospel: seen clearly by some, missed entirely by others standing in the same room.
