Grace That Saves
Salvation is a gift given, not a wage earned.

Paul does not describe unsaved people as sick, weak, or merely mistaken. He calls them dead in trespasses, in verse 1. Dead people cannot improve themselves, cooperate partially, or contribute a portion of the solution. That is the condition grace addresses.
The turn in verse 4, but God, is the hinge of the whole passage. Nothing in the person changes the situation. Something in God does. Rich in mercy and great love are the reasons given, not anything found in those who were dead.
- Grace begins with an honest diagnosis: spiritually dead, not merely struggling.
- The change described is God acting, not a person recovering.
- But God, in Ephesians 2:4, is where the sentence turns.
Father, I did not save myself, and I could not have. Thank You for being rich in mercy toward me when I was dead. Keep me from ever thinking I contributed to my own rescue. Amen.
